User Navigation within VR

Opportunity

I was brought onto a VR project where the users would need to have the ability to switch between several environmental scenes and activities. I started by creating a small user flow of the scenes/activities that would be included and then got to work immediately designing concepts for how these environments and transitions would look in VR.

Process

I first set out to establish a visual language for how I could communicate VR transitions for the development team to understand. I tested out various way to illustrate concepts and arrived with a design that was effective. Once I had an approach, I mocked up different scene transitions that I reviewed with the team. We landed on a dome-like environment that could fade in and out in a stylized manner that was not too overwhelming for the user.

Visualization of a potential scene transition

I created 360° 2D environment textures that could work with the 3D elements that the dev team would mockup. I then designed interface elements for the main user navigation.
